Air Conditioners

Rooftop units are where most service calls start, and where the wrong part costs you a second trip. Shrouds, control boards, fan motors and capacitors vary by series and often by revision within a series[1][2] — so identify from the model plate, not the silhouette.

Coleman Mach series

Coleman Mach rooftop air conditioners are built by Airxcel.[1] Model numbers run five digits, one character and three digits, for example 45203*876 (Mach 10) or 47204B876 (Mach 8 Plus).[1][2] Parts lists key some parts to the last three digits, such as a white shroud for 876 and a black one for 879, so match parts to the full number.[3]

Shrouds, fan motors[4][5] and control kits differ between Mach models that look the same from the roof. Check the plate before ordering.

About the Coleman Mach 8

Mach 8 is a family of Coleman rooftop RV air conditioners and heat pumps. Coleman's spec sheets list 13,500 and 15,000 BTU units on R-410A and 115 V, with an 8.25-inch shroud height and a 9,200 BTU Mach 8 Cub.[1][2][3][4]

Parts lists titled "Mach 8 Plus" cover the models with a B in the model number (e.g. 472X4B87X), which use a different compressor, indoor motor and start parts from the original Mach 8.[5][6]

Questions

What is the difference between the Mach 8 and the Mach 8 Plus?

On the 15,000 BTU air conditioner the parts lists show a different compressor (Tecumseh HG373AR, 1450-4069, on the Mach 8; HGBB515BAA, 1450-42392, on the Plus), indoor motor (1468A3389 vs 1468B3389), fan (blade 1472D5041 vs fan assembly 47233-3051) and start parts. Some parts carry the same number on both, including blower wheel 1472A1191, venturi ring 1472-004 and gasket package 47233-3301.[5][6]

How do I read a Coleman Mach 8 model number?

472X3 is a 13,500 BTU air conditioner, 472X4 a 15,000 BTU air conditioner, 470X3 and 470X4 the matching heat pumps, and 472X1 the 9,200 BTU Mach 8 Cub. A B in the model number marks the Mach 8 Plus. The last digit gives the shroud colour: 6 = Arctic White, 9 = Black.[1][2][3][4][5]

Can a heat strip go on a top-down Mach 8?

No. The Mach 8 parts list says heat strip assemblies cannot be used with top-down models.[5]

Mach 10 is a family of Coleman rooftop RV air conditioners and heat pumps. Coleman's spec sheets list 13,500 and 15,000 BTU units on R-410A, with an 11.8-inch shroud height.[1][2][3]

How is the Mach 10 different from the Mach 8?

The Mach 10 shroud stands 11.8 inches tall, against 8.25 inches on the Mach 8. The 15,000 BTU Mach 10 uses the same Tecumseh HGBB515BAA compressor family as the 15,000 BTU Mach 8 Plus, but a different fan blade (1472-5051).[1][2][5][8][9]

How do I read a Coleman Mach 10 model number?

452X3 is a 13,500 BTU air conditioner and 452X4 a 15,000 BTU air conditioner; 450X3 and 450X4 are the heat pumps; 452X7 is the 11,000 BTU Power Saver.[1][2][3][4]

Dometic Brisk Air series

Brisk Air is Dometic's standard-height rooftop air conditioner.[1] Our diagrams cover the 57908 (8,000 BTU), 57912 (11,000 BTU) and 57915 (13,500 BTU)[1][2] model families, among others.

In Dometic's model-number decoder, the four digits before the dot are the configuration (7915 is 13,500 BTU) and the code after the dot holds the shroud color (XX1C0 white, XX1J0 black).[1][1] Shroud and board part numbers follow them, so read the whole number off the plate.

About the Dometic Brisk Air

Brisk Air is a family of Dometic rooftop RV air conditioners. Dometic's own model-number code splits it into two generations: Brisk, with model numbers starting with 4, and Brisk II, starting with B.[1]

The Brisk II units in Dometic's 2024 and 2025 catalogs all use R410A refrigerant and come as 13,500 and 15,000 BTU air conditioners, a 15,000 BTU heat pump, a high-efficiency model and a commercial-grade 15,000 BTU unit.[1][2][3]

Questions

Is the Brisk II the same as the Brisk Air?

No. Dometic's model code treats them as two generations of the same family: a model number starting with 4 is a Brisk, and one starting with B is a Brisk II. Dometic sells one conversion kit for both: the Coleman to Brisk Air / Brisk II conversion kit, legacy number 3314537.000.[1][4]

How do I tell which Brisk Air I have from the model plate?

Read the model number left to right. The first character is the generation (4 = Brisk, B = Brisk II). Next is the grade (5 = standard, 7 = commercial). Then the configuration: 7915 = 13,500 BTU, 7935 = 13,500 BTU with heat strip, 9516 = 15,000 BTU, 9536 = 15,000 BTU with heat strip, 9530 = high efficiency, 9186 or 9196 = 15,000 BTU heat pump. An ending of XX1C0 means a white shroud and XX1J0 a black one.[1]

What refrigerant does the Brisk II use?

R410A. Every Brisk II model in Dometic's 2024 catalog is listed with R410A.[1][2]

What does Dometic cross-reference the Brisk II to?

Dometic's catalogs cross-reference Brisk II models to its FreshJet 3 and FreshJet 4 series: B57915 to FJX3473M (13,500 BTU), B59516 to FJX3573M (15,000 BTU), B59530 to FJX4373EHE and B59196 to FJX4573EHP.[2][3]

How do I read a Dometic Penguin model number?

The first digit 6 means Penguin. Then: type (4 = cool only, 5 = heat pump); factory board (0 or 1); control (3 = none, 4 = analog, 5 = CCC, 8 = CCC II, 9 = single-zone LCD/CT); heat strip (1 = none, 3 = installed); capacity (0 = high efficiency, 2 = 11,000 BTU, 5 = 13,500 BTU, 6 = 15,000 BTU). So 651816 is a Penguin heat pump with a board, CCC II control, no heat strip, 15,000 BTU. The code alone does not separate the original Penguin from the Penguin II.[3]

Does the Penguin II come as a heat pump?

Yes. Dometic lists both air-conditioner and heat-pump versions; the heat pumps in the 2024 catalog are 651815 (13,500 BTU) and 651816, 651916 and 650016 (15,000 BTU).[1][2][3]

RV rooftop air conditioners

Most RV air conditioners are rooftop units: a condensing section on the roof under a plastic shroud[1][2], and a ceiling assembly inside that holds the controls and return-air grille.[3][4] Ceiling assemblies come in ducted and non-ducted versions, and the same rooftop unit can be paired with either.[5][6]

The parts that fail most are the fan motor, the start and run capacitors, the control board or thermostat, and the shroud itself from sun and branches. The compressor and sealed system are rarely field-repaired.

Identify the unit from its model plate, not its looks. On rooftop units the plate is on the base pan under the shroud[2], and Coleman also puts a model and serial label on the bottom of the roof unit, reached from inside by lowering the ceiling plate.[1]
